The Letter to my Colleagues

Dear Colleagues,

Have you ever thought that it is possible to study music – I mean, of course, study seriously – on the Internet? Frankly, I myself would not believe some ten years ago that it is possible; moreover, I probably would argue against the idea. But these are different times and thanks to progress in computer technology, we have a great opportunity now for individual work with a personal coach, consultant – an expert capable to help you to rise to a much higher levels in your profession.

And all this is without even leaving your home!
So, what does all these mean for us?

I am sure that I will not be mistaken if I say that the majority of professional musicians are not very happy with their professional achievements and they wish to have something more. After all, ancient wisdom says, “Not to go forward means to go back”…

Having worked for more than two decades in the best orchestras of the world (and Europe in particular), I’ve had the opportunity to observe this subject closely and now I can say with absolute confidence that the overwhelming majority of the artists in orchestras are not happy with their position.

For example, almost every violinist in the second violin section of an orchestra would like to be a first violinist, at least in the same orchestra, and most of the first violinists would like to see themselves in the concertmaster’s chair. Concertmasters usually aspire to lead a higher-level orchestra…

A colleague of mine, the concertmaster of one of the best orchestras in the world (I’m not going to name names here) he, himself a true legend, which most of classical-music lovers throughout the world have admired in big and famous violin solos, he told me that he deeply regretted not having become a soloist like his childhood friend – a well-known violinist…

I am sure that you yourself could continue filling out this kind of a list with individuals you know, right?

What is the most interesting/intriguing is that the majority of such people – our colleagues – really deserve to have the better position but, unfortunately, they don’t.

Why is that?

Very simple: they are afraid to take a risk and, having already a more or less “normal” job, i.e. a position in their orchestra, do not dare to audition for orchestras they would very much like to join. And this happens with the overwhelming majority of musicians in orchestras around the world.

I think that I will be right if I say that the percentage of such orchestral players, especially among string players, is approximately 95 %.

It is possible to boldly say that the principal cause of this phenomenon is lack of self-confidence. In the majority of cases, this lack of self-confidence is caused most of the time by technical, not psychological or any other problems. But the good news is that technical problems can be solved! And in most cases it can be done quite easily.

And now I would like you to ask yourself whether you consider yourself a lucky member of the tiny group (would estimate it to less than 5%) that believe that it is possible for them and it’s worthwhile to do the work that could, let’s say, within a half-year lead YOU to the position of your dreams.

If yes, my congratulations to you! You have just taken the most important step from desire to intention to grow and get the deserved place in your profession and in your own life.

And please, do not even doubt it. After all, we do not want something supernatural, do we? We simply wish and aspire that our professional skills will be appreciated the way they should and that every musician will have a real chance to get the deserved job and so to live a fulfilling, interesting, worthy life.
